CIAC (The Cephalopod International Advisory Council) was proposed by Malcolm Clarke in 1981 during a meeting of cephalopod workers in Plymouth, UK. Those researchers agreed to meet again in Banyuls, in 1983, and at that meeting CIAC was formally born.
In 2002, Eric Hochberg and Emma Hatfield published A Brief History of The Cephalopod International Advisory Council (CIAC), which gives far greater insights into the origins of our organisation, including listing all our past meetings. Since 2002, our triennial meetings have taken us to Phuket, Thailand (2003), Hobart, Australia (2006), Vigo, Spain (2009), Florianópolis, Brazil (2012), Hakodate, Japan (2015). Our next meeting will be in St. Petersburg, Florida in 2018. Proposals to host CIAC2021 will be accepted in Florida in 2018.
